Twisted Railing - Magic!

Sapele Mahogany twisted rail design - custom carving in action! This piece is part of a much larger exterior railing that will incorporate Sapale, Yellow Cedar and Bronze.

Modern Stair Designs by NK Woodworking

Coming out of the shop this month we have two unique takes on modern stair designs! New Traditions Staircase is a blend of Blackened Bronze and Sapele Mahogany with European style block treads. The balustrade and newel post on this stair showcase the lovely contrast of the two materials.

NK Woodworking's Steel Ribbon Stair is primarily Blackened Steel, with a continuous Steel Ribbon for treads and a contemporary horizontal balustrade. Maple hardwood is used for the custom arced stringer and the handrail, creating a nice contrast in both color and natural grain between the two materials.

Custom Sculptural Doors by NK Woodworking & Design

We are building a portfolio of one-of-a-kind doors for both interior and exterior uses. Here are a couple for you to feast your eyes upon - one is a double-sided live edge design of English Walnut; the other combines Figured Maple, Black Walnut and a custom piece of art glass for the window (Glass by Mark Olsen of Unique Art Glass).

These doors are both for interior uses in a very special home.  They are great examples of grabbing opportunities to be creative throughout a home and maximizing the potential of texture and beauty the materials offer.

Sculptural Oval Table Design by NK Woodworking

Just completed - this adjustable table for a Seattle home - to be used as a card table, a small dining table, and a showpiece! Black Walnut with White Oak inlays on the tabletop; a White Oak and Stainless Steel detail make up the very unique base design.

NK Woodworking's Latest Stair Design Installation in Progress

Installation is in progress for this Figured Maple and Peruvian Walnut custom stair design with blackened bronze details. Here are some snapshots of rail parts before leaving the shop and the installation on site. We are loving the darkness of these Peruvian Walnut treads contrasting with the Maple stringers. Check it out!

Juanita Cottages Project - Phase 1

NK Woodworking uses repurposed lumber in many of our designs. to include tables, stair parts, and other unique home details. For the Juanita Cottages Project, based in Kirkland, Washington, we are repurposing trees from the property and using the material to fabricate special design features that will be unique to each cottage. Phase 1 of this project is the removal of the Birch and English Walnut trees that will then be milled and dried for a number of months while we design and plan how to use the material. Included are pictures of the team removing the trees.

Black Walnut Seashell Floor Design

Hardwood flooring has been a feature in home design for centuries, in many shapes and forms. Here at NK Woodworking & Design, we are completing a very unique floor with a Seashell inspired design in Black Walnut. The ceiling above this floor will be a mirror of the design, but in Maple, with curved Sapele beams. The design will guide your eyes to the glass Nano wall that opens up to a view of the Atlantic Ocean.

Installation of this project begins next week and we are looking forward to seeing pictures as the project comes to fruition. This home includes a number of special interior design details by NK Woodworking that will be completed over the next few months, so stay tuned!

Nature Stairs of Stone

A Weekend in Vegas with a Community of Stair Craftsman

Last weekend I went to Las Vegas for the annual Stairway Manufacturers Association Conference. This is when the leaders in the industry throughout North America get together and talk stair codes and design and enter completed stair projects in the annual awards competition. I appreciate this opportunity to hang with the old timers and hear about their decades of being in business in this niche industry. Stairs are a unique calling within the contracting and design world full of talented, fun, and knowledgeable people. When I go to these events and experience the camaraderie I feel like I am pulling my head out of my own fish-bowl and swimming in the sea again.

This year I was honored to win 5 of the 7 categories we entered plus 2 People's Choice Awards. This is another record-breaking number of wins for NK Woodworking! The support from the SMA members was phenomenal. Before and after the awards, many people pulled me aside to tell me that what we are creating is unlike anything anyone else has done with stair design, to keep doing the work and continue to be an inspiration to them.  To hear these sentiments from other master stair-builders and people who understand this medium is a real honor; sometimes awkward or ego inflating; mostly encouraging. I continue to feel motivated and impassioned to push the boundaries of what’s possible within the world of stairs.

After the awards ceremony my wife and I and some friends from the SMA walked the strip, went up and down a few flights of a floating curved escalator in a nearby hotel, went on a boat ride on the second story of a surreal hotel, and then it was onto a night of "high-stakes" gambling. Come Sunday morning I was back in Seattle with $40 more than I started with and seven awards in my suitcase.

Seashore Stair - Modern Design / Traditional Joinery

NK Woodworking incorporates traditional woodworking techniques with contemporary stair design. This Walnut and Maple stairway is a prime example…..Distinct craftsmanship defines this unique stair and rail system we just installed on the New Jersey shore.  The balustrade highlights the dovetail joinery that connects the balusters to treads and horizontal rails.  The use of contrasting hardwoods and inlays adds to the creative expression of this railing.

NK Woodworking Bathtub Press

In Mountain Home's March/April 2015 issue of the magazine, we were honored when they chose to showcase one of NK Woodworking's bathtub designs. The tub shown is made of Sapele with a Black Walnut rim.

The following quote describes this section in the magazine, called Clean & Simple. "Natural beauty shines bright in the pure lines and elemental shapes of these new bath fixtures and finishes. Top-quality materials...add luxurious texture and rich color to shapes that often rival sculpture in their gorgeous simplicity."
